¿Alguna vez te has confundido al usar despite e in spite of en inglés?
Diferencias entre despite e in spite of
- Despitenunca lleva of. Decir despite of es incorrecto.
- ✅ Despite the rain, we went for a walk (A pesar de la lluvia, fuimos a dar un paseo).
- ❌ Despite of the rain, we went for a walk.
- In spite of sí requiere siempre la preposición of.
- ✅ In spite of the rain, we went for a walk.
- ✅ In spite of the rain, we went for a walk.
- In spite of missing the bus, Tom arrived on time (A pesar de perder el autobús, Tom llegó a tiempo).
Si queremos expresar negación, simplemente añadimos not delante del verbo en -ing:
- She enjoyed the party despite not knowing anyone (Ella disfrutó de la fiesta a pesar de no conocer a nadie).
- He went jogging in spite of not feeling well (Él salió a correr a pesar de no sentirse bien).
- Tom was upset in spite of me apologizing.
- Lisa stayed calm in spite of her brother’s teasing.
- I went out despite the strong wind (Salí a pesar del fuerte viento).
- They enjoyed the trip in spite of the bad weather (Disfrutaron del viaje a pesar del mal tiempo).
c) Oración completa con the fact that o question words
- Despite the fact that he was tired, he kept working (A pesar de que estaba cansado, siguió trabajando).
- In spite of the fact that she had little experience, she got the job (A pesar de que tenía poca experiencia, ella consiguió el trabajo).
También podemos introducir la oración con what o how:
- Despite how difficult the exam was, I passed (A pesar de lo difícil que era el examen, aprobé)
- In spite of what he said, she didn’t change her mind (A pesar de lo que él dijo, ella no cambió de opinión).
Un error muy común al usar in spite of y despite, especialmente al utilizarlo con una oración completa (sujeto + verbo) consiste en omitir las estructuras “the fact that” o la question word “what” o “how”.
❌ I stayed home despite I was sick.
✅ I stayed home despite the fact that I was sick (Me quedé en casa a pesar de que estaba enfermo).
❌ She went jogging in spite of it was raining
✅ She went jogging in spite of the fact that it was raining (Ella salió a correr a pesar de que estaba lloviendo).
Para expresar la misma idea correctamente, sin utilizar “the fact that” podemos usar although o even though, que permiten la estructura de sujeto + verbo directamente:
- I stayed home although I was sick.
- She went jogging even though it was raining.
